Hi Tweeters,

I just got back from a week in the Midwest - Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
Before I went I bought two books from the American Birding Association - the
Iowa Wildlife Viewing Guide and the Wisconsin Wildlife Viewing Guide.

This is an excellent series that gives brief descriptions of places to visit
to view wildlife - state parks, wildlife refuges, preserves, national parks,
etc. There is a description of the habitat and special features of the
area, the wildlife that might be seen - nesting birds, migrating and
wintering species, as well as mammels and amphibians. Also included are
good directions to each place.

The lists of birds are not extensive, just the highlights.

We stopped at eight or ten spots listed and were pleased with what we found.

Highlights of the trip: Sedge Wren at Hayden Prairie Preserve in Iowa,
Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Swiss Valley Nature Area near Dubuque, Iowa and
Yellow-throated Vireo at a state park in Minnesota. We also saw fire flies
at several spots in Iowa and Wisconsin which were exciting.

The Wildlife Viewing Guide series covers about 25 states. I recommend them
highly. They sell for from $9-$13.
