Aloha,
Thanks to all who responded to my plea for bird guides on Kauai. My mother
and I spent 3 hours on a private tour with Carl Berg and had a great time.
Dr. Berg knows the island very well and has permission to enter some areas
the average tourist wouldn't know about. Due to state regulations he could
not take us to bird the forests, but he offered wonderful suggestions for
our own exploring. Besides birds we saw endangered sea turtles and monk
seals-including a mother and her 4 day old pup.
Our list:
* = endangered
'Apapane
Kaua'i 'Amakihi
*Hawaiian Stilt
*Hawaiian Gallinule (saw 2 adults with 2 young)
Black-crowned Night Heron (also juvenile)
*Hawaiian Duck
*Nene
Red-footed Booby (hundreds nesting)
Great Frigatebird
White-tailed Tropicbird
Red-tailed Tropicbird
Laysan Albatross (My personal favorite! Two young sitting in private gardens
with big feet stretched straight out in front. Their heads were still downy
gray with adult coloring on body. Some birds still nest on the cliffs
despite housing development)
Wedge-tailed Shearwater
Cattle Egret
Chestnut Mannikin
Common Myna
Erckle Francolin
House Finch
House Sparrow
Japanese White-eye
Java Sparrow
Junglefowl
Northern Cardinal
Nutmeg Mannikin
Red-crested Cardinal
Rock Dove
Spotted Dove
White-rumped Shama
Zebra Dove

Mahalo,
