If anyone would like a lovely drive through Clallam County, the Northern
Parula is still present at Lake Ozette. This morning (6/3/01) it was
very accommodating, singing loudly over and over in alders and spruces at
the Lake Ozette Ranger Station. It is a beautiful spring male, very busy
gleaning insects from the alder leaves and picking at the hanging lichen.
The song is kind of like a chopped-off Orange-crowned song, a rising
trill ending very briskly with a dropped note at the end. Curiously, at
least twice when we observed it there was a female Yellow Warbler hanging
out in the vicinity -- maybe the "throwaway" note at the end is a little
attractive??

Ask any ONP employee at the ranger station -- they're all kind of jazzed
that it's there. If the weather continues overcast, such as is predicted
most of this week, perhaps it will stick around. And thanks to Scott
Gremel for first reporting it.
