Tweeters,

We've finally tallied all the reports for the Olympic Peninsula Audubon's
Clallam County Birdathon, held on May 12th. We had an average year, with
no real surprises, but still a very nice list of breeding species (and a
few visiting species) for Clallam County. Several pelagic species were
added by Scott Horton, who went halibut fishing out of La Push that day.
We had several obvious misses that we usually see, like Western Grebe,
Black Scoter, and Black Turnstone, suggesting that spring departures of
these wintering species were advanced over other years. Despite our cool
spring, we had very good representation of late spring migrants,
suggesting that song birds were not slowed down on migration. For
example, we had record numbers of Western Tanagers and close to record
numbers of Olive-sided Flycatchers and Swainson's Thrushes, despite
having fewer observers on our count than past years. Their timely
arrivals may have been due to warm temperatures in California and the
southwest in the weeks preceding our count. Our mountain tallies,
however, suffered this year, with fewer observers up high.
