I received a call Friday afternoon on June 8, from Debbie Jensen
who said that she had seen a flock of about 20 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at
the Steigerwald Lake N.W.R. near Washougal. Debbie said the birds rose
from the lake and circled before flying off at about noon. I searched the
local Columbia River sandbars with no luck and decide to head to
Vancouver Lake to check there. I didn't find these birds but at Vancouver
Lake off shore of the Flushing Channel there was a flock of 22 WESTERN
GREBES, 2 CLARK'S GREBES, a male RUDDY DUCK, and a male GREATER SCAUP.
Apparently these are birds displaced by the drought conditions to
our South, somewhere in the local area there should be a large flock of
pelicans.
