Mid-morning yesterday we watched a bluejay do a very interesting and useful task that involved some risk-taking.
He stationed himself on our concrete driveway just below a closed garage door and watched the eaves under a rain gutter.
He then flew repeated sorties under the eaves, hovering there briefly and dropping back to the concrete to watch before he flew again. When he finally finished I went out to see that he had completely emptied the larvae from a paper-mache yellowjacket nest. Since no adult insects were there I wondered if he had eaten them too, though I doubt it because the larvae would be both tastier and safer. Is this useful service common for bluejays?
