This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Tuesday, June 19th - Evening Update
Featured birds: LEAST FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and COMMON NIGHTHAWK

Sightings for Tuesday, June 19: The LEAST FLYCATCHER was again near the
large fallen log along the Nature Dyke at Grant Narrows RP, Pitt Meadows.

The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen again in early morning at Colony Farm. To
search for the bird follow the trail from Shaughnessy St until it divides
into two. Turn right and continue on until you come to a point
approximately 100 metres before a stand of tall cottonwood trees. The bird
usually favours the dense shrubbery in front of a prominent snag, however,
there have been reports of a calling bird much closer to the cottonwoods. A
LAZULI BUNTING was seen on a power line by the boarded-up buildings on
Colony Farm Rd.

2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were observed over 72nd Ave and York Cres, North Delta
and a TURKEY VULTURE was seen in overflight in the Green Timbers area of
North Surrey at 148St and 100 Ave.

Monday, June 18: In a late report from Reifel, highlights included three
pairs of AMERICAN BITTERNS heard booming in the marshes, 3 BLACK SWIFTS and
3 TURKEY VULTURES. Also at Reifel, a family of GREAT HORNED OWLS can be
found in the NE corner.

A late report was received for an EASTERN KINGBIRD at Colony Farm and 3 male
LAZULI BUNTINGS on Colony Farm Rd.

In other sightings for Tuesday, a juvenile GREAT HORNED OWL was discovered
along a wooded trail at Elgin Heritage Park, South Surrey and 27 WHIMBREL
were reported from around the area of Drayton Harbor Rd, Blaine. Up to 300
BLACK SWIFTS were tallied on 168 St between Highway 10 and Tynehead Park, N.
Surrey.

Sunday, June 17: The LEAST FLYCATCHER was seen again near the large fallen
log along the nature dyke at Grant Narrows RP, Pitt Meadows. A GRAY CATBIRD
was near the entrance to the trail.

At Colony Farm, the YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was well seen and heard shortly
after midday.

Other sightings at Colony Farm included several male LAZULI BUNTINGS, an
EASTERN KINGBIRD, a VAUX's SWIFT, an OSPREY and up to 40 BAND-TAILED
PIGEONS.

A BARRED OWL was seen along the ravine trail at Campbell Valley RP, Langley
and an OSPREY was noted in flight NW of the Lougheed Mall. An early-morning
survey along Woolridge Rd, Pitt Meadows resulted in an unusual sighting of
two TURKEY VULTURES perched only six feet from the ground in roadside trees.

Out-of-town at the Cheam Wetlands area, east of Chilliwack, 2 LEAST
FLYCATCHERS were present as well as 2 GRAY CATBIRDS and good numbers of
RED-EYED VIREOS and BULLOCK'S ORIOLES.

Saturday, June 16: A late report was received detailing the highlights of a
regular survey of the Terra Nova Nature Area, Richmond, which included an
AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 EASTERN KINGBIRDS and 8 BLACK SWIFTS.

At Grant Narrows RP the first-year male AMERICAN REDSTART was seen and heard
on the south side of the Nature Trail just beyond the first large fallen
log. Also heard and seen nearby on the north side of the trail was the
LEAST FLYCATCHER. In the same vicinity was a GRAY CATBIRD. Another GRAY
CATBIRD was reported from the trail entrance. Other birds seen there were 3
RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS and a family of BULLOCK'S ORIOLES.

At least one YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was heard and seen at Colony Farms,
Coquitlam. A singing male LAZULI BUNTING was located in a field across from
the cottonwood trees. 2 additional buntings were seen along Old Colony Farm
Rd, adjacent to the boarded-up buildings.

Friday, June 15: An arrival male AMERICAN REDSTART was seen and heard along
the Nature Dyke at Grant Narrows RP. Along the same trail was a singing
LEAST FLYCATCHER as well as a GRAY CATBIRD, 2 EASTERN KINGBIRDS and a
RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER.

A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was again seen and heard at Colony Farms, Coquitlam.
Still at Colony Farms, a total of 5 male LAZULI BUNTINGS were tallied; 4
from the Coquitlam side and 1 on the Port Coquitlam side.
