This is Dave Holick with the Northern Idaho / Eastern
Washington / Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, June 22,
(2001). This hotline, sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every
Friday evening. If you wish to bypass this recording and simply leave a
message for me, including the date of your sighting and the DeLorme
atlas page numbers and coordinates if you have them, push the star
button on your telephone now. Otherwise, wait for the beep at the end
of the tape. Please give me good directions, your fellow birdwatchers
will appreciate it.

Again this year, a GREY FLYCATCHER was located on the morning of
June 16 by Dennis Rockwell at HornRapids County Park NW of Richland, WA
DeLorme page 39, A-B-5.. The bird was seen in the Black Locust trees
that border the south and west edges of the RV parking area. This is in
the vicinity of "The Horn" where Benton County is currently developing a
campground on the southern edge of the Hanford Reach National Monument.

This week it was reported by Andy Stepniewski that on a birding trip the
week of June 11-15 he and Hal Opperman located BOREAL CHICKADEES on
Salmo Pass and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Salmo Mtn., which are in Pend
Oreille Co in extreme northeastern WA,. The road over the pass and to
the mountain takes off from the east side of Sullivan Lake east of
Metaline Falls. WA DeLorme page 119, B-6.

Andy also reported finding a female WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER at Little
Pend Oreille NWR headquarters, Stevens Co. WA DeLorme page 104, A-3.

A PACIFIC LOON in breeding plumage was reported by Charles Swift at
Sandpoint, ID on Lake Pend Oreille west of the "Long Bridge" ID DeLorme
page 62, B-C 2. The bird was seen from the 4th Street Park which can be
found easily by going left just after you enter Sandpoint across the
Long bridge from the south and winding through a residential area to the
shoreline.

The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in Ponderay, Bonner Co Id. reported earlier,
was located again on Jun 16, according to Charles Swift. Ponderay is
just north of Sandpoint along US 95. The bird is in a brushy field
behind the K-Mart near the Motel 6. Heading north from Sandpoint on US
95, continue into Ponderay, turn right onto Kootenai Cutoff,
and then pull in behind the K-Mart. Follow the alley to the end where it
abuts the Motel 6 property. The bird is right there. ID DeLorme 62, B-2.

A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, attending a nest on June 16, was also
reported by Charles Swift. The bird was found directly across from the
visitor
information center just before the Dickensheet Junction (about 20 miles
north of Priest River). ID DeLorme page 62, B-1. The nest was about 30
feet high in Lodgepole Pine directly across (west side of the road) from
the large, wooden "Welcome to Priest Lake" sign. An adult was regularly
attending a very noisy young and the nest was easily observed from
across the street near the sign. The bark in a large area around the
nest hole was removed.

On June 15, Tom Aversa reported 15 WHITE-FACED IBIS at Kahlotus Lake,
Franklin Co. WA DeLorme page 54, C-4. Two were observed carrying nesting
materials.

The EASTERN PHOEBE reported earlier in Leavenworth, Chelan Co WA was
seen again June 16 by Dennis Rockwell and on June 17 by Bruce LeBar.The
bird is very cooperative and has been around for about 4 weeks. The bird
is on Blackbird Island, which is on the south side of US 2. When
entering Leavenworth, turn south on any street and follow it as far
south as you can go, then turn west. Find Katzenjammer's Restaurant.
Below the restaurant is a short (~100 foot) ramp to a bridge. The bird
was singing
persistently from cottonwoods next to the bridge, cavorting with other
Empids, and flying under the bridge. WA DeLorme page 82, D-3.

The HARRIS?S HAWK reported previously in Lewiston, ID, could not be
located this week.

Good birding.
