Hi Tweeters,
I co-lead a field trip with Carol Schulz and Fred Boesche yesterday to
Colockum Pass, which is about halfway between Ellensburg and the Columbia
River about 15 miles S of Wenatchee. Had 103 species on the day, including
some species that were seen at Blackbird Island in Leavenworth on our way
back home at the end of the day. Highlights included:
Black Swift at Snoqualmie Pass
Virginia Rail on Colockum Road, heard only
Short-eared Owl NE of Ellensburg, perched on irrigation wheel
Common Nighthawk perched in tree on Colockum Road
White-headed Woodpecker on Colockum Road, seen in flight
Horned Larks NE of Ellensburg
Lark Sparrows singing on Colockum Road
Red-eyed Vireos at Blackbird Island
And finally, the EASTERN PHOEBE was seen by everyone that decided to try to
find it with us at Blackbird Island. We searched the area for about a half an
hour without seeing or hearing the bird. I then played a recording just once,
on the off chance that the bird was there but not calling. We immediately
heard the bird from a tall Cottonwood near the bridge onto Blackbird Island.
We then saw it flycatching and perching in this tree. A very nice end to the
day, and a life bird almost everyone who saw it. This bird was found exactly
1 month ago today and is still around.
