This is Dave Holick with the Northern Idaho / Eastern
Washington / Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, June 22,
(2001). This hotline, sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every
Friday evening. If you wish to bypass this recording and simply leave a
message for me, including the date of your sighting and the DeLorme
atlas page numbers and coordinates if you have them, push the star
button on your telephone now. Otherwise, wait for the beep at the end
of the tape. Please give me good directions, your fellow birdwatchers
will appreciate it.

A male HARLEQUIN DUCK, in breeding plumage was seen on June 24 on Coeur
d'Alene Lake, Kootenai Co. Id. at the end of Harlow Point Road, where
there is a turn around and boat launch. Harlow Point road is north and
west of Harrison opposite the Thompson Lake turn off. ID DeLorme page
60, B &C, 1.

LONG-BILLED CURLEW were included in Charles Swift's and Joe Lipar's Big
Day Count in Boundary Co. Id., as were the next three species. These
birds were found at the Nature Conservancy's Ball Creek Preserve. ID
DeLorme page 48 inset A, 2-3. Several have been located here by the
Coeur d'Alene Audubon folks doing bird survey for TNC, and are presumed
to be nesting. This is a remarkable find and the only known summering
for this species in Idaho north of Grangeville, where they are presumed
to be breeding on the Camas Prairie. At least 3 (pairs?) in the area
according to Kris Buchler.

Several BLACK SWIFTS were located at Kootenai NWR, Boundary Co Id. near
Island Pond where Riverside Rd. cuts through the marsh. ID DeLorme page
62 A, 3. (see map
http://www.npsc.nbs.gov/resource/othrdata/chekbird/r1/kootmap.htm)Birds
were seen early morning around 6:00 AM, also several in the evening at
about 7:00 PM. Presumably these birds come down in elevation to feed in
the morning and
evening.

Numerous calling AMERICAN BITTERN starting at about 5:30 AM and a number
of LEAST FLYCATCHERS singing in Cottonwoods at Kootenai NWR at various
places. Boundary Co ID DeLorme page 62 A, 3 & page 48 inset A, 3 were
also found by Swift and Lipar.

A MARBLED GODWIT was seen by Harold Ward on June 27 at the Genesee
Sewage Lagoons, NezPerce Co, ID DeLorme page 54 C, 1.

The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in Ponderay, Bonner Co Id. reported earlier,
was observed again on Jun 23, by Judy Dearborn and was seen carrying
insects to and white presumably fecal sacks from a probable nesting
location. Ponderay is just north of Sandpoint along US 95. The bird is
in a brushy field behind the K-Mart near the Motel 6. Heading north from
Sandpoint on US 95, continue into Ponderay, turn right onto Kootenai
Cutoff, and then pull in behind the K-Mart. Follow the alley to the end
where it abuts the Motel 6 property. The bird is right there. ID DeLorme
62, B-2.

On June 25, Scott Atkison reported report that only 1 WHITE-FACED IBIS
remained at Kahlotus Lake, Franklin Co. WA DeLorme page 54, C-4.

The EASTERN PHOEBE reported earlier in Leavenworth, Chelan Co WA was
seen again June 25 by Scott Atkison. The bird is very cooperative and
has been around for about 5 weeks. The bird is on Blackbird Island,
which is on the south side of US 2. When entering Leavenworth, turn
south on any street and follow it as far south as you can go, then turn
west. Find Katzenjammer's Restaurant. Below the restaurant is a short
(~100 foot) ramp to a bridge. The bird was singing persistently from
cottonwoods next to the bridge, cavorting with other Empids, and flying
under the bridge. WA DeLorme page 82, D-3.

A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was seen along I-90 approximately one mile west of
Ritzville, Adams Co. WA DeLorme page 71 D, 5 on June 25 by Scott
Atkinson.

A GREY FLYCATCHER reported last week at HornRapids County Park NW of
Richland, WA has been changed to a probable DUSKY FLYCATCHER.

Good birding.
