Not too long ago I posted a message asking for help to avert the loss of a
heronry at North Bay, near Allyn, WA.

Earlier this evening I posted another asking about the fate of two osprey
nests on Tacoma Power towers there after the earthquake.


When I think about it, I fear that I have not done what I could have done to
protect these and other nesting areas.

I have known about both the heronry and the two osprey nests for about 15
years, but it never occurred to me that anyone _didn't_ know about them;
they were so obvious to everyone in the area that I never thought to check
if the "authorities" knew about them.

The landowner at the site of the heronry was evidently able to get a
logging permit because the heronry was not recognized as such by the issuing
authorities, and he/she did not volunteer the information that there was a
heronry there.

Now I worry that the two very productive osprey nests on the Tacoma Power
towers may also be unknown to the proper authorities.

In addition, there has been ample evidence over the last 3 or 4 years that
Green (Backed) Herons have been nesting in the same area (until, perhaps the
last year or so), and I worry about their continued nesting success.

Is there a centralized (or other) telephone number or website at which one
could attempt to register such nesting sites so that the information gets to
those who are issuing permits for, or other wise authorizing, potentially
damaging operations?
