The Smew was seen this morning in the pond at Malheur headquarters from
about 6:15 to 6:25 AM, Pacific Time. We arrived there well before dawn,
hearing two Great Horned Owls and lots of Snow Geese and seeing eleven Bald
Eagles silhouetted in a tree. The geese started flying over as it began to
get light out. Then ducks started appearing on the pond. A few flew in,
but most just appeared, swimming out into the open water from the reeds, we
think. There were a few Canada Geese, Buffleheads, and Common Goldeneyes.
Then the Smew appeared out of the fog. We watched it for about ten minutes
and saw the black mask. Then while I was looking for it in the scope for a
better look, it simply disappeared. We didn't see it fly or swim away, but
it was gone and didn't reappear. By then there Northern Pintails,
Ring-necked Ducks, Lesser Scaup, N. Shovelers, a Gadwall, and American
Wigeons had appeared on the pond, and a Ring-necked Pheasant was on the
shore and a Say's Phoebe on a bush. Marsh Wrens were singing.

Driving from HQ back to the highway, we stopped by a field full of Snow
Geese, one blue phase, about 25 Greater White-fronted Geese, and Canada
Geese.
