I've been visiting old friends in southern West Seattle for many years.
There are always several species hanging around their various back porch
feeders. They watch chickadees, flickers, hummers, finches, nuthatches,
etc. every morning between 7 and 8 am as they enjoy their morning tea and
coffee.

Last Wednesday, they noticed that for the first and only time in recent
memory there were no birds at all, some three hours prior to the big
shake. Their first guess was unseen raptor(s) lurking nearby. Within an
hour or two after the quake, bird activity was back to normal.
