Sorry for the late post . . . .


On Saturday my parents & I left Spokane and headed down to Little Goose Dam
to look for the Gray-crowned Rosy Finches. In my usual birding style it
took us ALL DAY to get there but . . .

We saw many Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks along the way including one
beautiful dark morph Roughy. We saw 3 Hooded Mergansers in the creek not to
far south of Latah. At that stop we also saw a pair of singing meadowlarks
sitting in the top of a tree. In Colfax, up above the cliffs, I saw a pair
of Red-tailed Hawks in a mating flight. We saw a Coopers Hawk near mile
post 103 on Highway 26. On Rock Springs Road we found several Western
Bluebirds of both sexes and a Northern Shrike. Going down SR 261 we spied a
large herd of deer - species unknown. There were several Common Goldeneye
in the river as well as a huge flock of Mallards and some rather smallish
short-necked Canada Geese. And near the dam we saw several of the
Gray-crowned Rosy Finches flitting in and out of the cliff swallow nests on
the cliff face. We did manage to find a couple that were out in the open
and so got some great looks. It was pretty late by the time we got there
and there was little activity. Also heard that wonderful song of the Canyon
Wren at the same site - saw it too.

Oh, and one fat Yellow-bellied Marmot.
