The first RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD males arrived in Washington last week.
The migration is still fragmented, though most Oregon coastal sites
have reported multiple individuals. A female Rufous was reported from
Catching Slough near Coos Bay, OR apparently gathering nest material.

ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRDS were reported from New River, OR. This is
pretty close to the northern extent of their range.

In flower news, Salmonberry is just beginning to bloom at Astoria, OR
and Olympia, WA. Coastal willows are showing about 30% full stamen bloom
on male plants and the first (apparently) gravid pistilate catkins turned
up on counts last week. Insect counts on willows continues to grow
at approxomately exponential rates.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
