Hoping to see some signs of spring, I walked around Black Lake Meadows for a
while this morning. The best indicator was in the marsh, where Red-wing
males are displaying and calling; one towhee sat at the top of a tree and
called. But Robins are still largely flocked up, and I haven't heard Song
Sparrows singing yet (though my bad ears limit me). One Bewick's Wren
feeding, not singing. Negative reports may not mean much, but in the spring
and summer the marsh is always full of swallows, and there were none yet; I
always see at least one hummingbird in season, but I didn't see one this
morning. A small flock of Pine Siskins feeding in the conifers was still
typical of winter. But, the days are growing longer and warmer, and those
ol' hormones are going to be flowing soon.
