The last time I sent out a note was about hearing a Screech Owl in this
very small fragment of woods between Bel-Red Rd and NE 8th and 124th, here
in Bellevue Washington. I then got interrupted by technological
difficulties. But I am back and so are the birds outside my office. Was
surprised to see a Pileated Woodpecker last week. Lately the Downy
Woodpeckers have been coming as a pair to the suet. At one point another
female entered the group and there was a lot of wing raising and bowing
towards each other. I have never seen three Downy Woodpeckers in one place
at the same time.
There is currently a threesome of Northern Flickers being very active. At
one point I saw two females (or immatures?) going through the head bobbing
process that I normally attribute to courtship procedures.
A Red-tail Hawk hangs out in the woods pretty regularly. The Dark-eyed
Juncos and the Spotted Towhees have been showing their tail feathers as if
somebody else is watching.
