I checked some nest boxes at a garden in Federal Way, and found one to
contain a nest and don't know what creature has fabricated it.
The first layer is a standard BCCH "mattress" of moss, but then some bird
or critter has pulled in dead leaves - rather large dead ones, and formed a
deep cup that goes up the sides of the box. The leaves are almost entire,
and are not at all what I usually see when the chickadees use it.
the hole in the box is the 1 1/8" approved size, and it has been chewed on a
little, but it is only slightly larger.
Can a Douglas squirrel get in such an opening? I have seen one in the
vicinity.
