I guess this better start in Yakima County, where Friday afternoon a
Ferruginous Hawk was perched at MP 20 on SR 24 east of Yakima. A Sage
Thrasher was a mile east of Vernita Bridge (Columbia River) along SR 24. A
male Eurasian Wigeon finally made an appearance at the Para Ponds along
McManamon Road just NW of Othello late in the afternoon along with nearly a
thousand other ducks, plus a group of seven white-fronts mixed in with
hundreds of Canadas. The wigeon and white-fronts were not found yesterday
morning or late afternoon, or this morning, but yesterday Bob Flores and I
saw a Golden Eagle come in to harass the geese along the west shore of the
ponds. Later at Royal Lake, toward the west end of Columbia NWR, a Snow
Goose sat with more than 6,000 Canadas and 4 Tundra Swans. It was not found
this morning. Finally, a few more Sandhill Cranes are trickling in, and
yesterday afternoon there were 39 leaving a roost on the south side of the
wetland (SR 26, Mile 30.5) just west of the Adams/Grant Co. line where they
roosted regularly two years ago.
