Cascadia Hummingbird Report - 03/12/2001

There were multiple reports from the Puget Sound Region in
Washington last week and hummingbirds have turned up in most
Willamette Valley latitudes. Two low elevation Cascade sites
have also reported in, Oakridge, OR at 1200' and Zigzag, OR
at 1425'. Females Rufous Hummingbirds were reported as far
north as Silverton, OR.

Much to my surprise, I caught a male Rufous at the Neawanna
Wetland in one of my mistnets while trying to get in last
sparrow catch done before we move to the breeding season
station. We did not band it, because I wasn't expecting
hummingbirds and wasn't ready.

In flower news: many sites are reporting some Salmonberry blooms,
but most sites in forested canopy are still at least a week
away from first flowers. Total insect numbers continue to increase
on willows as the number of stamenate and pistilate catkins
increase, the composition of the insect species is showing
interesting fluctuations.
