Hello,

I would say that an Acorn Woodpecker in Monroe would
be extremely unlikely. If you see this bird again,
please try to get photos. The filberts make this
sound a little convincing, but more details and
documentation are needed. Did this bird have a light
colored eye?

Incidentally, I heard someone on the radio two weeks
ago who said they lived in Steilicoom or Puyallup or
somewhere down there, and found a dead Acorn
Woodpecker on the sidewalk in front of their house.
They said it was still warm too. They got it stuffed
by a taxidermist and it now sits in their living room.
Again, it sounds very bizarre, but you would think
that if they had a specimen like that in hand, they
could (or the taxidermist) be able to put a correct
I.D. on it.

Who knows?
