Spending much of the weekend in our east Ballard yard, Kris Baker & I collectively saw a bald eagle, merlin, and peregrine from the yard on Friday. The merlin perched for a solid hour directly across the street, having been given away by the mob of BC chickadees. We were tipped off on the soaring eagle when our kitty rushed under the car and looked up fearfully. The peregrine was kekking and carrying off a pigeon-sized bird as Kris was looking at the merlin. Yesterday I saw the merlin again, perched atop a nearby fir tree.

In Edmonds I continued my streak of not finding loons of any kind, especially arctic loons, despite at least 20 hours on the water in the last few weeks. Today I was out for six hours in a Boston whaler, but saw just the usual grebes, shags, scoters, and squeaks. About 20 brant were at Ocean Avenue, and a few harlequins flew by Edwards Pt.
Weather permitting, I'll be on the water again several more times this week.
