In answer to why a group of herons would be flying together- They were
probably either 1) just flushed out of the colony (next to the Workshop
Tavern on Leary Way) or 2) had been flushed out earlier, and had all decided
to return to the colony en masse.

It is often impossible to determine what causes a flush. Also, I have
frequently seen large groups return to the colonies together a few minutes
after flushing. Safety in numbers?
