We have been using a tray less thistle feeder since February. I have
buried three siskins and delivered one fresh carcass to the Burke Museum in
that time. I've also picked up two male Evening Grobeaks in the same area.
They got Burked too. Some of them have managed to use a tray less tube
feeder the same size as the thistle feeder but stocked with sunflower seeds.
Both were on a deck trellis about 15 feet from the house. These deaths may
be the result of a panic response into the side of the house when the
neighborhood assassin, SS Hawk, makes a pass down the deck as she seems to
do almost daily. I moved the feeders out into the yard but I'm still
finding siskins on the grass around it. My wife watched one sit fluffed up
and very still in a bush for about two hours Monday and the next time she
looked it was dead on the grass. No sign of cats. Go figure.
