This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Mar 16 (2001). This hotline,

A BARRED OWL is being seen on the campus of Walla Walla College in Walla
Walla WA according to Mike Denny. Apparently this bird has been around for
nearly a month, and it's only the second Barred Owl in Walla Walla Co in the
past 20 years.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, first seen Mar 4 in Richland, Benton Co WA was seen
on Mar 11 by Dennis Rockwell (dennis.rockwell at gte.net) and Mar 14 by Dick
Johnson (johnsonre at wsu.edu). The bird is in the Country Ridge Estates off
Keene Road in south Richland. From I-182/US 12 exit 5-A at Richland, travel
southeast 1.2 miles on WA 240 and exit to Columbia Park Trail. Turn right
and travel west on Columbia Park Trail about 2.7 miles to intersection with
Kennedy Road. Turn left and travel south about 0.2 mile to intersection with
Keene Road. Turn right and travel northwest about 0.5 mile to Country Ridge
Estates located on southwest side of the road. Turn left onto Country Ridge
Drive. Country Ridge Drive is the main street into this rather new
subdivision. Dennis was told the bird prefers the back yard at number 1205
near the top of the hill and that some folks have had to play a tape and
show some patience to see it. WA DeLorme page 39, C-6.

Up to 4 EURASIAN WIGEONS are in Clarkston, Asotin Co WA. On Mar 11 Tom
Underhill reported seeing 2 or 3 males, and on Mar 14 Burt Redburg (sp?) saw
4 drakes. The birds are at Swallows Park which is on the south end of
Clarkston, along WA 129 and the Snake River. Burt saw the birds in an
American Wigeon flock near the northernmost entrance. WA DeLorme 43, AB-8.

Another EURASIAN WIGEON was on Lake Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID last
weekend. The bird was at Cougar Bay just south of CdA along US 95 according
to Lisa Hardy, Shirley Sturts <ssturts at iea.com>, and Stephen Lindsay
(slindsay at dmi.net).

Dick Johnson reports a SWAINSON'S HAWK flying over Pullman, Whitman Co WA on
Mar 11 for a very early record.

SANDHILL CRANES were flying over, and 5 TRUMPETER SWANS, at least 15 TUNDRA
SWANS, and 1 DUNLIN were at Kahlotus Lake, Franklin Co WA on Mar 14
according to Dick Johnson (johnsonre at wsu.edu). The lake is just east of
Kahlotus along WA 260. WA DeLorme 54, C-4.

A BARRED OWL is being very vocal in Genesee, Latah Co ID according to Terry
Gray. Terry has been hearing the bird every night for the past 3 weeks,
particularly between 7 and 9 pm. It seems to prefer the dense trees at the
corner of Hazel and Pine. If you enter Genesee from US 95, Pine Street heads
north just after the grocery store.

A first-winter HARRIS'S SPARROW was a one-day-wonder at my feeder 5 miles
south of Moscow, Latah Co ID on March 14.
