The main difference is that most cedar chests and cabinets
are built to be air tight. A properly built nest box is
not. After a year of exposure they get an oxidized patina
that probably closes off any remnant fumes.

Studies on parasites in birds that use nestboxes suggests
that there is not much anti-pest effect.
