The Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife has plans for most kinds of nest
boxes. They recommend rough cedar boards. We used the plans last year
and made some violet-green swallow nest boxes complete with the diamond
shape hole specifically for them. We got them up kind of late. Had one
box full of swallows! 2 1/2 inches of moss in the box lined with our
Malamute/Husky's hair for warmth and softness when we cleaned them
out.

Russell Link's book "Landscaping for Wildlife in the Pacific Northwest"
has all the nest box plans in the back of the book. Great all around
wildlife book.

Last year the swallows came 3/24 along with the rufous hummingbirds.
This year the hummingbirds came 2 weeks early. Haven't see the swallows
yet.

Take care,
Nancy
