The Nature Conservancy, in cooperation with the Department of Defense, is
seeking 1 seasonal filed biologist to assist conducting research on the
black-capped vireo on Fort Hood, Texas.

DUTIES:
1. Assist with vireo banding operations using standard techniques with
special attention to mist netting, handling, and sex and age determination.
2. Locate and identify individuals banded in previous seasons. Record
locations on maps, aerial photographs, and with GPS.
3. Locate and identify breeding pairs and map their breeding territories.
Locate and monitor nests for each breeding pair and maintain locations on
maps, aerial photographs, and with GPS.
4. Conduct point-count surveys along established routes in vireo habitat.
5. Record and input data into database and integrate field data with GIS.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A four year degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Zoology, or
equivalent research experience.
2. A strong ornithological background with field experience in
identification, mist netting, banding, nest searching, and territory
mapping.
3. Computer literate with word processing, data entry, management, and
analysis experience. Familiarity with global positioning systems desirable.
4. Reliable, self-motivated, good communication skills and the ability to
work independently and as a member of a work team.
5. Good physical condition. Must be willing to endure harsh field
conditions, long or unusual hours, variable work days, and occasional
overnight travel.
6. Familiar with the operation of 4WD, standard transmission. Rugged
terrain and remote locations are a given. Map reading skills are essential.
