The most recent HWI (Hawkwatch International) newsletter, Raptor Watch
Vol. XV No. 1,
Spring 2001 describes an interesting discovery of owl migration in the
Manzano Mountains of NM. They tried their procedure in 1999 and captured
and banded 7 flammulated owls. In 26 nights of netting during the Fall
of 2000 they captured and banded 94 Flammulated Owls and 19 Northern
Saw-Whet Owls. This Fall 2001 they will conduct the first full-season
project.
The newsletter is full of interesting reports on all the migration
banding stations in North America with a summary of all the data on
species, numbers, etc.
$15 will get you a student or senior membership; $25 supporting; $35
sustaining.
I feel that this is a most worthwhile organization for birders and raptor
lovers to support.
