Quasi-rare Bird Alert - 3/24/2001

Todd Thornton and I found very nearly white GYRFALCON (probably
sub-adult; white phase). It was first seen on the northmost
trestle crossarm on Trestle Bay. It flew south in classic GYR
fashion (low and straight) to make a hit on a duck, missed and
returned to land about mid-trestle. It was frosty white with
medium gray barring. The head was completely white except for
a dark gray mask over the eyes and auriculars. A ROUGHED-LEGGED
HAWK was also seen in the area.

Also seen today were 2 CASPIAN TERNS and a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE
at parking lot D. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS
were singing at the Battery Russell bike path.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
