In going through my old files, I find that back in Neanderthall days, we
conducted the annual aerial census of the Ross Goose in the Central
Valley (Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys and the Delta) on Feb. 19-20,
1959 and tallied 15,600 of these birds. Of these 10,275 in were found in
the San Joaquin, 5,300 in the Sacramento and 25 in the Delta area.
Aerial photos were taken. The highest count in five years. If you're
down that way in February next year, look for a few Ross geese.

As usual, flocks of all white geese were Ross, mixed flocks of gray and
white were Snow. Interesting was the association of Ross with Cacklers
and Snow with White-fronts.

Ancient history, what? I wonder what the counts are today? Must contact
the USFWS for information.
