Fourteen pages of records this month! Thanks to all of you for helping to
make more known about this great bird. I'm getting more and more sightings
so I'm sure more of you are looking up to watch this magnificent soarer in
all of his/her glory. Here are the reports from Washington, British
Columbia, and Oregon for the month of April, 2001:

01 -- 1 soaring over the Appletree Golf Course, Yakima; 9 over the Julia
Butler Hansen NWR; 2 east of Cathlamet; 1 over the Corder's Cheney preserve
in southwest Spokane County
02 -- 1 in flight over Lake Tye, Snohomish County; 1 over Sea Island, B.C.;
4 circling near Nooksack; 3 over Whidbey Island
03 -- 2 north of Chehalis
04 -- 2 high and southeast of Roche Harbor; two northwest of Friday Harbor
05 -- 1 at Skookumchuck Prairie, B.C.
06 -- 1 circled and landed just south of Mission City, B.C.; 2 at the mouth
of Kennedy Creek in Mason County; 2 northwest of Hoquiam; 1 at Kent
07 -- 3 west of Aberdeen; 2 standing on the sand at Long Beach's North
Head; 2 flying along the Naselle River; 7 soaring over Leland Valley north
of Quilcene; 2 over Green Mountain Road, eastern B.C.; 2 at Penticton, B.C.
(same ones?); 2 west of Lyle; 7 kettling over the Goldendale-Bickleton road
08 -- 1 over Manchester SP; kettle of 6 north of Carnation; 2 at Black Lake
Meadows; 1 at the Wynoochee River Valley; 1 at Schouweiler; 3 at Coquitlam,
B.C.; 4 west of Cle Elum; 2-10 up Chumstick Creek Road; 1 at Creston, B.C.
09 -- 1 over Joseph Whidbey SP; several at Lantzville, B.C.; 2 at Nanaimo,
B.C.; 2 west over Sequim; 6 at Chinook Valley, Pacific County; 7 at the
Julia Butler Hansen WTDR; 4 circling and 1 on a pole east of Brady; 3 over
Fall City
11 -- 1 moving north along the west side of Whidbey Island
12 -- 1 on a power pole near Shelton; 3 east of Ocasta; 1 soaring over
Spencer Island; 2 over Walla Walla
13 -- 1 over Newcastle Golf Course; 1 coming out of the woods at Casey SP,
Whidbey Island; 1 over Tynehead Park, Surrey, B.C.; 1 over beautiful
downtown Port Coquitlam, B.C.; 3 over SR2/mm33
14 -- 17 (!) circling over Easton (they *must* nest in this area); 1 at
Grant Narrows Park in Pitt Meadows, B.C.; 1 circling just south of Carnation
15 -- 2 over Weir Prairie near Rainier; 1 over Gibsons, B.C.; 1 near Lake
Wenatchee's Nason Ridge
16 -- 12 perched in a tree on the road to Roslyn; 1 immature two miles from
Sunnyside; 2 in Minnekhada Park, Coquitlam, B.C.; 7 over Active Pass, B.C.;
12 on the ground near a marsh at Fish Lake; 1 near Pinantan Lake, northeast
of Kamloops, B.C.
20 -- 1 at Cowiche Canyon west of Yakima
21 -- 1 at Swan Lake, Vernon, B.C.; 1 east of Winfield, B.C.; 2 on a power
pole in Kimberley, B.C. performed a ritual then took off and caught a
thermal; 4 at Washougal; 5 at Cape Horn; 6 at Skamania; 2 at Beacon Rock;
18 gliding near North Bonneville Dam; 4 at Stevenson; 2 at Carson; 3 at the
Wind River Mouth west of Home Valley; 4 at Home Valley; 3 at Dog Mountain;
2 at Drano Lake; 5 soaring high over the White Salmon River near Underwood;
5 near Bingen; 8 at the Klickitat River mouth; 6 at Balch Lake; 2 at
Murdock; 2 at Dallesport; 1 at Wishram Heights; 2 at Maryhill Museum; 3 at
Maryhill SP; 2 west of Towal; 1 at Sundale; 1 at West Roosevelt; 1 east of
Alder Creek
22 -- 1 at Bottle Beach; 2 at Goldendale; 1 at Horsethief Lake SP; 2 north
of Lyle; 2 w/one feeding on a dead fish with an audience of 3 imm. bald
eagles and 1 adult golden eagle (must have been quite a sight!); 2 at
Stevenson; 3 at Prindle; 4 at Mt. Pleasant; 1 at the Chehalis Steam Plant
23 -- 6 near Cle Elum; 3 near Easton; 6 near Fall City, 4 on the ground and
2 perched in cottonwoods; 3 perched on top of a dead elk between Jaffray
and Elko, B.C.
24 -- 2 over Little Skookum Creek; 3 near Mount Vernon
25 -- 1 over the Satsop River; 1 east of Elma; 1 at Brady Loop Road; 5
soaring over the Tahuya Peninsula in Mason County
26 -- 2 riding thermals near Jackass Mountain south of Lytton, B.C.; 1 near
Mount Vernon; 5 same or different individuals soaring over the Tahuya
Peninsula
27 -- 1 at Bowerman Basin; 1 near McCleary; 7 near the Hoquiam Sewer Ponds
28 -- 4 north of Longview; 5 at Ridgefield NWR; 2 at Vancouver Lake; 1
north of the Nisqually River bridge; 2 near Bullfrog Creek; 1 over Easton
29 -- 12 at SR223/mp2, 2 at Pumphouse Road, and 3 at Mud Lake, Toppenish
NWR; 3 on Dale Road with a sandhill crane near Abbotsford, B.C.; 15 coming
to roost along the river between Winthrop and Twisp; 8 or 9 strutting
around in a farmer's field west of Union
30 -- "some" at the Great Blue Heron Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C.
