Interesting report of close cohabitation between Kestrel and Lewis'
Woodpecker -- a couple of years ago I reported on this list a Kestrel and a
L W'pecker sharing a branch within an oak tree at Fort Simcoe, a very few
feet apart and apparently paying not a whit of attention to each other.
Looks as if the populations of both birds at Fort Simcoe and the scarcity of
trees and other perches in the area might make this a relatively frequent
occurrence. I've also seen Lewis' Woodpeckers perched on sagebrush bushes
at Ft. Simcoe -- surely not their perch of choice, other things being equal?

We finally made the pilgrimage to Ft. Simcoe for the Lewis' Woodpecker show.
Apart
from the sheer numbers, the most enjoyable parts were (1) the spectacle of
fly-catching
and "soaring" woodpeckers (at one point six were aloft simultaneously), and
(2) the
incongruity of one of them perched atop a tree just a couple of feet away
from an
American Kestrel.
