Subject: BIRDS NOTED AT FIRE MTN SCOUT CAMP, SKAGIT CO., MAY 6

Tweeters,

I tried to send this birding report directly from the
http://birdnotes.net website, but it didn't work. So I sent it to
myself, and am forwarding it to TWEETERS. I hope it's of interest to
some of you.

The Fire Mountain Scout Camp is located at the end of Walker Valley
Road (near Big Lake, a short distance SE of Mount Vernon). It is an
attractive locality with a fairly good variety of habitats including
second-growth forest (coniferous, broad-leaved, and mixed), small open
fields, and a small man-made lake ("Lake Challenge") and adjacent
swamp.

There was nothing very unusual in the species list. Most of the
flycatchers, vireos, and warblers were probably on territory rather
than migrating. However, the Wilson's Warblers, Warbling Vireo, and
Black-headed Grosbeaks were probably newly arrived, judging by my past
experience in NW Washington and SW B.C.
