Last time I was at Nisqually, I saw a Great Blue Heron attempting to swallow a garter snake about 3 ft long. He was really struggling because the snake had tied itself in a knot! And as we watched, the snake tied a second knot! It didn't help however, because the heron eventually got him swallowed, but then walked away with a huge bulge in his neck.

Quite an amazing sight!

Chris Stinson did a master's thesis in zoology at the U of WA on the diet of red-tailed hawks at a nest around Easton, WA, and as I recall the pair fed almost entirely on garter snakes.
Last year Kris Baker and I saw a snake being swallowed by a great blue heron at Nisqually; Kris says she's also seen an Iowa kestrel carry a garter snake about 2 feet long to its nest!
