After two years of trying to encourage the returning VIOLET GREEN SWALLOWS
to nest in the swallow boxes around the yard we finally got one pair nest
building. They seem to be part of a group of about six which have taken up
residence in the neighborhood. About a week ago a male HOUSE SPARROW began
perching about 18 inches above the swallow house and sounding off whenever
the swallows get close. I have even seen him drop down to the house porch
to prevent them from landing. At times he will drive off perched swallows
nearby. When he leaves the swallows enter the birdhouse. Supposedly the
sparrow cannot get through the small opening so I assume the swallows are
nesting inside despite his efforts. Hope so.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone with more experience in this
area.
