I don't consider myself an expert, but when my younger daughter was 7 or 8
(about 10 years ago) I bought her a pair of binoculars. They were Bushnell
Ensigns, 7x35, with focusing by a lever rather than a knob. At the time
they cost about $25. I had several thoughts in mind. She was not able to
successfully focus with a knob. The lever is great for rapid, easy focus.
They are quite light. Also I did not want to spend much money, so if she
damaged them or lost them I would not be upset with her. Sure enough she
lost them the first trip we took. She left them on a picnic table at the
Olympic National Park and we did not miss them until we were on the ferry
coming home. When we arrived at our house I called the Park, describing the
location of the table. They sent someone out to look. The binoculars were
still there and they sent them to us by mail. (Thank you Park personnel!)
She used them for about 10 years until I bought her a better pair for her
17th birthday.
