Especially wonderful is Tiri Tiri Matangi which is a small island preserve on the north island outside of Auckland.

If you're planning a trip to New Zealand and want info on birding down there, feel free to contact me. I just got back from a three week trip to the South Island and the southern tip of the North Island. Saw some amazing birds, especially on Kapiti Island Preserve north of Wellington and at the Royal Albatross colony near Dunedin. Tons of penguins down there as well.
