Hello Tweets,
Today my mother and I birded the Nisqually NWR from 4:30pm-7:30pm, despite
the rather warm temperatures in search of a few recent quality birds
including the WHITE-FACED IBIS that was located along the McAllister Creek
trail heading from the west parking lot in the flooded fields north of the
trail. The bird was located at 4:45pm and remained until we left at 7:30pm
in an extensive canal further west, presumably to roost for the night, as we
were joined by Dave Hayden and Jim Pruske, who also observed the bird
foraging along the canal. Other birds at this location included:
2 Am.Bitterns
1 pair of Wood Ducks
5 Blue-winged Teal
3 Cinnamon Teal
1 Greater Yellowegs
1 Whimbrel(flying over)
1 female WILSON'S PHALAROPE
1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER(rare spring migrant)
1 pair of Yellow-headed Blackbirds
A generous, quick walk, after 5:15pm along the McAllister Creek trail that
follows north to south at the west end of refuge to the northwest corner of
the refuge, with a generous scoping of the Nisqually Delta at high tide,
produced a few other notable highlights included:
6 Blue-winged Teal
3 Cinnamon Teal
1 Green-winged Teal
9 White-winged Scoters
6 Surf Scoters
1 Peregrine Falcon
9 Black-bellied Plover
43 Whimbrel
1 MARBLED GODWIT
5 Dunlin
6 WILSON'S PHALAROPES(5 females, 1 male)
5 Willow Flycatchers
14 Purple Martins
2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS(1 bird sitting on top of a willow tree south of the
north dike at the northwest corner of the refuge, just west of the double
benches, the other bird calling from dense willows and other thick
vegetation south of the photo blind, just east of the McAllister Creek
trail)
1 singing male LAZULI BUNTING
3 Yellow-headed Blackbirds(2 males, 1 female)
A very rewarding spring evening!
