Cascadia Hummingbird Report - 5/23/2001

The number of new Rufous Hummingbird sightings has dwindled to
a trickle.

Bear Valley Springs, CA 04-17-2001 107 35.151 118.6285
Ardrossan, ALB 05-09-2001 129 53.3300 113.0800
Dorris, CA 05-17-2001 137 41.9937 121.8966
Calgary, ALB 05-20-2001 140 51.0000 114.0500

I put together a 3-dimensional trend map with all of the data
points up through last week. If nothing else, it's very pretty.
The majority of data points seem to fit a west to east model for
hummingbird movement. The points in Colorado, however, suggest
that those birds arrive directly from the south, possibly up the
Rio Grande.

I will continue to update the first detection maps at least through
June, but will be discontinuing weekly Cascadia Reports with this
report.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
