Yesterday, 11:00 a.m. I watched a male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD doing courtship
flights over a green shrub behind the Center for Urban Horticulture
buildings on the east side of the Fill. If you begin walking on the main
gravel path from the Center, heading toward the Fill, to the south (left) is
an area of neatly kept shrubbery, landscape rocks, a tiny pond and well
mowed lawn. There is a number of 10-12' tall, now leafless shrubs. The
male was perching on the top twig of one of these. He took off and made at
least a dozen "courtship" flights, centered over a still green shrub nearby.
He then disappeared for a few moments and returned to his perching twig. I
assume someone has a feeder up right close by? Might be the same bird
reported a number of times last winter. This bird was a showoff, turning
about on his perch in good light to show all his markings.
