Just received my new hummingbird guide, and I thought I would take this opportunity to voice my opinions on it.
First the details:
Hummingbirds of North America the photographic guide by Steve N.G. Howell.
Suggested price on the back cover:29.95. Was just printed in the last couple of weeks so I am not sure if any stores have it yet. I ordered mine from Academic Press at the AOU meetings and just received mine today.
It covers all 24 species of hummingbirds found in North America, including the rare ones like Cinnamon,Bumblebee, Bahama Woodstar etc..
Each species is given its own section and anomalies like hybrids and partial and full albinism are covered as well with photographs. There is over 200 photographs for the guide (no I didn't count them, just stating from the guide).
Each species account is covered well with detailed distribution maps, measurements, status and very detailed identification section. Sections in the identification cover:structure, similar species,voice,habitat,behavior,molt and a general description.
All of these categories are well layed out with subheading so it is easy to find if you just want information of molt of Lucifer Hummingbird for instance.
I have not checked out the content of the guide as I did just receive it, however the layout and organization looks well done. If you get a chance to check the guide out I suggest it and see if it would be a good addition to your library. Please not that this is an unbiased opinion and I have nothing to gain from this.
