Subject: Stumpy,[Port Angeles] that Emperor Goose

Tyler and Tweets:
This Emperor Goose was first noted at Lincoln Park 1-3-00. It got a
fishing
line tangled on its foot and eventually lost the foot. Roger Hoffman a
naturalist tried to catch it to remove the line but was unsuccessful. It has
persisted since at Lincoln Park including last summer.
However, an Emperor Goose was seen at the Olympic Game Farm beginning
9-13-98 and seen off and on there until 12-21-98. There was also a report of
one present each day for 5 days just east of Port Angeles beginning 9-27-98.
Also one was seen on Kitchen-Dick Road 10-6-98. One then showed up at
Lincoln Park on 1-3-99 and was seen there on 1-4 and and twice a few miles
to the south on 1-6 and 1-16-99. It was not reported after that. Could this
have been Stumpy? Did he migrate normally or just go unnoticed in this
underbirded area?
Stumpy showed up at a reasonable date in 00' but overstayed its normal
departure time which is suspicious. I called Bob Boekelheide to see if
the Washington Bird Records Committee did accept the record. They did.
However Bob did see two Emperor Geese between Sequim and Port Angeles this
summer in a farm pond with domestics and felt they were obviously exotic. A
noted exotic local waterfowl breeder told Bob recently that he knew of no
Emperor Geese being raised locally. Have I managed to confuse the whole
situation?
The whole point is that the origin of a particular individual of
waterfowl or hawks is a lot more problematic than for most passerines
although with so many songbirds caged in Mexico there is room for confusion
there also.
To answer the question shortly: The Washington Bird Records Committee
has vetted this bird which may be resident in Port Angeles for some time to
come.

hunted down the EMPEROR GOOSE, aptly named Stumpy for a missing foot, in
Port Angeles. What a gorgeous bird! Most of us are counting it on our lists,
but I just wanted to make sure, since there has been so much controversy in
the past . . . is it countable? And if not, what is its status (in the
process of being accepted . . .)?
