I had the opportunity to take a detour through Canby, Oregon today on my way
home from a conference in Hood River. The Cassin's Kingbird was again
present near Canby, but in a slightly different area than it's usual(?)
spot. I observed the bird today from 1000 to 1020 on the telephone behind
the red barn. The bird was not down in the low spot, but up on the terrace
on the west side of Gun Club Road. When up on the wire, it could best be
seen from the dirt/ gravel pullout on the right, at the gate, just after
dropping down into the low area. When I first arrived there was frost in
the shaddows throughout the lower area. Perhaps with the cold, the bird has
moved up where the insects are more active but may move back down in the
afternoon (assuming it continues to stick around). The bird made numerous
feeding forays low and would not be visible for a time, only to reappear on
the wire a few minutes later. A bit more distant, but great views with a
scope, and the morning sun at my back. What a fine day.
