Birders,

I thought you might be interested in hearing about a new bird species
for B.C.-- a WHIP-POOR-WILL, found dead near Ucluelet, on the west
coast of Vancouver Island. To my knowledge, there are no prior records
of Whip-poor-will for B.C., Washington, Oregon, or Idaho, although the
A.O.U. checklist reports a specimen from Kupreanof Island in
southeastern Alaska.

Bill McIntyre, who found the dead bird, is the Park Naturalist for
Pacific Rim National Park, and Adrian Dorst, who sent the attached
message, is a well-known local ornithologist, and co-author of the
authoritative "Birds of Pacific Rim National Park", published some
years ago by the Royal B.C. Museum.

The B.C. bird list surges onward toward 500!

You may be interested in hearing about a dead Whip-poor-will found at
Amphitrite Point, Ucluelet by Bill McIntyre on November 5. I just
picked up the specimen yesterday and have taken off a wing and tail to
dry them. The bird had been dead for at least a week, maybe two, so
cannot be saved in its entirety. Anyway, the wing and tail are enough
to identify it. Too much white in the tail for a Poor-will and the
tail is too long as well. Also the wing underneath is quite dark.
