Hi Tweets -

No Swamp Sparrow today (in fact, not too many sparrows at all), but it was
still a nice day. The weather was changable, with a touch of drizzle, a bit of
wind, a bit of sun - over all, quite pleasant. The birding was spotty, but we
had a marvelous mixed flock at the first footbridge (opposite the rowing club
dock), which followed us and which we followed for quite a while.

The water level was at 4.77 feet, about 8 inches higher than at 4:30 pm last
Wednesday, and more than a foot higher than at 7:30 a.m. last Wednesday. Tall
boots are needed to get to the boardwalk, as the last 60 feet of trail is under
about a foot of water.

Highlights:

Northern Pintail Many flocks (50+ total birds) flying N and S
Common Merganser Pair flying down and up the slough
Bald Eagle Adult cruised down over the slough
Sharp-shinned Hawk At rowing club
Cooper's Hawk Large female southeast of boardwalk
Hairy Woodpecker Pair at first footbridge
Brown Creeper At first footbridge
Orange-crowned Wblr At first foodbridge

Besides the birds mentioned above, the mixed flock also contained Black-capped
Chickadee, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Bewick's Wren.

Red-tailed Hawk made for 4 raptors. Northern Flicker made 3 woodpeckers.
Bufflehead, Mallard, Hooded Merganser, Ring-necked Duck, and Gadwall made 7
species of duck. However, both duck species counts and total duck numbers seem
low this fall.

All told, a good day, and 50 species.
