Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Saturday, Nov 23 (2001). This hotline,

A SNOWY OWL south of Spokane WA is persisting. Gene Lynch reports the bird
was still there this morning. The bird is south of the south hill. To get to
it from I-90, take the Freya exit in Spokane. Take Freya south to the
Palouse Hwy (about 3 miles or so). It may be marked South Palouse Hwy at
that point. Turn left, south, and follow the Palouse Hwy for about 3 miles.
At South Baltimore Road (Hangman Creek Golf Course) you start downhill. As
you emerge from the pines near the bottom of the hill there will be mown
fields. On the left will be lots for sale with some large new homes. The
dirt road at the bottom is Hoffman Lane (private). These fields are where
the owl has been found, both sides of the Palouse Hwy. WA DeLorme 89, D-5.
The Cattle Egret that was in the same locale was not seen today.

A PACIFIC LOON was on Lake Chatcolet, Benewah Co ID, at the southern end of
Lake Coeur d'Alene on 18 Nov according to Lisa Hardy. Chatcolet Lake is
along ID 5 about 5 miles east of Plummer. ID DeLorme 60, C-1.5.

Good numbers of EURASIAN WIGEONS are being seen in both WA and ID. In
Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID on 20 Nov, Gail Fields found a single bird in
Kiwanis Park. This bird has been in the Lewiston area for about a month but
is moving from pond to pond along the US 12 bypass around downtown Lewiston,
as well as the ponds in Kiwanis Park along Snake River Drive south of the
blue bridge between Lewiston and Clarkston.

Also in ID, Stephen Lindsay found an EURASIAN WIGEON at Squaw Bay on Lake
Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID on 18 Nov. Squaw Bay is on the west side of
the lake, just above Lake Chatcolet which was mentioned earlier...

In WA, an EURASIAN WIGEON was on the Columbia NWR, Grant Co WA, on 16 Nov
according to Randy Hill. The bird was on Migraine Lake and can be viewed
from the Soda Lake Dam, 1.6 miles south of the north entrance to the refuge
off O'Sullivan Dam Road north northwest of Othello. WA DeLorme 53, A-6.

Another EURASIAN WIGEON was with 2 SNOW GEESE on the south end of Sprague
Lake on 23 Nov according to Randy Hill, Shirley Wentworth, and Bob Flores.
Sprague Lake, Adams Co, WA straddles the Lincoln and Adams county line just
south of I-90. WA DeLorme 71, BC-8.

LAPLAND LONGSPURS were in a flock of Horned Larks in Lincoln Co WA on 20 Nov
according to Gina Sheridan. She and Joyce Alonso found the flock between
Reardan and Davenport. The flock was 3 miles south of Davenport on
Spillington (sp?) Road, 1 mile south of Zellmer Road just east of the jct of
WA 28 and Spillington (sp?) Road. Spillington isn't on the WA DeLorme, but
the other roads are on 87, D-7.

In Adams Co WA, 5 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES were 1 mile west of Washtucna on
WA 26 on 23 Nov according to Randy Hill, Shirley Wentworth, and Bob Flores.

An adult HERRING GULL and an adult THAYER'S GULLS were at the North Idaho
College beach along the Spokane River in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID on 18
Nov according to Stephen Lindsay. The college is off Northwest Blvd and the
beach can be observed by driving the dike road along the river.

COMMON REDPOLLS are still being reported throughout the region at numerous
locales in both WA and ID. The common denominator to date is birch trees -
look for birds foraging on birch trees in town, out of town, hither and yon,
etc.
