Jeff: My wife and I have ben using Swift Ultralite 8 x 42 binocs that
cost
+/- $200 at Eagle Optics. It does just about as good as the high priced
cadillacs. They have a catalog and price list that you can request.

The best kept secret in scopes is the Celestron 12-36 x 50mm
Maverick also purchased at Eagle for $117 including shipping. We use it
as a window mount to supplement our Kowa. It was the only scope we took
to Europe with us since we did not have to worry if lost or stolen. It
is also smaller and lighter than our big Kowa. It also works well on a
standard tripod. You will probably get as many suggestions as there are
birders. Good luck in sorting it all out. :-)
