Are these guys gnarly or what? (See Michael's Marymoor report below.) Now
compare their experience to mine. I went around Alki at a leisurely pace
yesterday afternoon. It was after high tide and there were lots of Black
Turnstones and Surfbirds right below the walkway, intently foraging about 15
feet away. Nice weather, and people walking the trails. An adult bald
eagle was perched on a light pole, about 30 ft above the trail. It was
bigger than my dog (and gave my little cocker quite a look-over). Around
past the lighthouse there were Harlequin Ducks, Surf Scoters, and Black
Scoters.
There is a little walk-on ferry which goes back and forth between Alki (near
Salty's Restaurant) and downtown Seattle. It's called a water taxi. It
only takes 8 minutes to get to downtown (pier 54), but I bet you could take
binocs w/ you and look at birds on the way. Costs $2.00 each way. It runs
every day on the hour from Alki, and on the half hour from Pier 54. It's
run by King County Metro. Sounds
fun.
Of course you won't have nearly as much fun and Michael, Brian, and Ollie
had at Marymoor this morning...
Yours, Carol Schulz
