I have also contacted WOS and they do not have any information on file
about who is color banding at the Skagit area. Would appreciate any
information Tweetsters might have.

While banding as part of a demonstration program for Seattle Audubon at
the Skagit WMA on Sunday Nov 25, we captured 2 song sparrows with un-
familiar band
series (176138855 and 176138833) the first which had 2 red color bands on
its right leg. Dan Froehlich at the UW will be asking if anyone in the
Zoology or Wildlife Sciences Dept is color banding there. I have also asked
John McCaughlin at WWU whether he is. I have started some initial banding
at the site in the winter with the intention of investigating the survival of
wintering sparrows at the site due to the amounts of grain left for waterfowl
and pheasants at the site. It is also a potential site for training volunteers. I
do not wish to upset anyone's banding project at the site, but John Garrett,
the manager at the site, did not inform me that there was anyone banding at
the site, so I assumed there was no one banding there. It is a big area, so if
there is any potential conflict, please contact me and we can modify our
banding location.

I would be glad to share any information and would be interested in whether
any other birds than SOSP were banded, and what other birds were
captured, as this information could be useful in helping design a project here.
WDFW is interested in quantifying the bird use of the site.

FYI, The second SOSP showed signs of callous and wear on the right tarsi
(metal band again on left leg) where there may have been a color band? This
may be of importance if there is any interest in following the color banded
birds over time. We have continued to catch birds color banded in 1997 at
McCHord AFB into this summer.
